Evangelion Casting. Channing Tatum as Toji
Suzuhara, the Fourth Child.
aboutThe sympathetic bad-boy of the story, Toji
Suzuhara could pull at your heart strings
because of his tragic story. First introduced
as Shinji’s antagonistic classmate and soon-
to-be friend, you discover that his tough
exterior is something he assumes in
response to events in his life that are out of
his control. We learn that he takes his
resentment of the Evangelions out on Shinji,
because his sister was injured and had to be
hospitalized during one of the destructive
battles between an Evangelion and an
Angel. After an event that allows Toji to
witness Shinji’s distress in the midst of
piloting the EVA, Toji and Shinji become
friends. Later, he is revealed to be the
Fourth Child (fourth selected), and accepts
the role in order to give his sister better
medical attention by conditioning her
transfer to NERV’s medical facilities. During
his test run with EVA Unit 03, recently
transferred from NERV-01 (Boston,
Massachusetts), an Angel takes over the
EVA trapping Toji inside while it goes
rogue. Ultimately, the Angel is destroyed by
EVA Uni 01 with the use of the Dummy
Plug pilot.
In the anime, Toji is critically injured —
being rescued from Unit 03 and is
hospitalized. In the manga, he actually dies
(I cried like a baby). It was difficult to come
up with an actor who had that rough and
tumble exterior but had the emotional
ability to convey a sense of vulnerability
(shown by Toji’s emotional breakdown to
Shinji about his fear of being a pilot). And
then I realized that the character John
Tyree from Dear John and Toji are
essentially one and the same. And Channing
Tatum was a clear pick for the role. The
actor was stereotypically the action-type of
actor, but after seeing Dear John, I saw
that Channing Tatum could give you a good
manly emotional breakdown. For cross-
cultural purposes, Toji (“second light”)
Suzuhara would be changed to Elior (“my
light is God” — shortened Eli) Regan
(“tragedy”). For picspammy’s 19th challenge: “casting”.
Evangelion casting. Allison Mack as Hikari
Horaki, Candidate for Pilot.
about Hikari Horaki, much like Kensuke, is one of
the “Other Children” as she is a student
alongside the others discussed so far. And
like Kensuke, she is “average” only due to
the lack of exposure the character gets in
the story. Little is really known of Hikari,
but due to her being one of the Other
Children, it is implied that she is at least
motherless (a requirement for pilot
candidacy). This is further implied in her
ability to cook, which suggests that she can
at least take care of herself (and
traditionally, the father of the household).
She is the class representative and is
continually harping on Toji for his lack of
everything when it comes to their school.
It’s revealed later that she has a crush on
Toji, despite her outward opinion of the
thug. Her relationship with Toji speaks a lot
of her own character. We see that she is
immensely caring, knowing that Toji, in
reality, is a kind person. After asking Shinji
and Asuka for advice on her crush, Shinji
advises her to make him lunch (because the
way to Toji’s heart is through his stomach).
The day she makes Toji lunch is the day he
leaves for his test run in EVA Unit 03. They
part with a conversation — with a reserved
Toji and a hopeful Hikari — and Toji leaves
with his parting words, “When I come back,
let’s try to be friends, okay?” Their
goodbye is bittersweet, giving Hikari hope
that Toji may return her feelings (or he
doesn’t completely despise her), but
unfortunately he is critically injured (in the
anime) and ultimately dies (in the manga).
Because of this Hikari is a character you
wish could find happiness, because she has a
type of unrequited love that you care about.
When it comes to unrequited love, I could
think of no one other than Allison Mack who
plays nine whole seasons of unrequited love
on Smallville. She does not physically look
like Hikari, but she has what it takes to play
the schoolgirl crush with a love that will
never be returned because of tragedy. For
cross-cultural purposes, Hikari (“light”)
Horaki (“-no meaning-“) would be changed
to Lyra (“star”) Smith (standard
surname).
